Mac the Monkey and his creation
Mac the Monkey was created in July 2009 by Rachel Mearns. Rachel has qualifications in nearly all styles of Dance, Musical Theatre, Pre–School Gymnastics, Acrobatic Gymnastics and Anatomy and Physiology and Law. She has over 14 years experience in teaching dance, drama, singing/music, gymnastics and sports skills to children and adults of all ages.
Alongside the creation of Mac the Monkey, Rachel also has her own Performing Arts School, Aberdeen Academy of Performing Arts and is Principal of AAPA College – The North East Scotland’s only full time college delivering Musical Theatre, Professional Dance and Acting and Performance HND Qualifications.
Our Mac the Monkey class lesson plans and Little Nursery Curriculum is devised by Rachel and her experienced team of teachers in dance, drama, musical theatre, music, singing, gymnastics and sports. All of our Mac the Monkey classes from the age of 6 weeks old teach key technical skills in gymnastics, sports and all performing arts areas. From basic pre-school dance steps laid down in syllabuses by worldwide dance examining bodies to basic gymnastics and sports skills identified by world sporting governing bodies, children develop key skills at a very early age through participation in Mac the Monkey classes.
Our internal assessments all contain key technical skills and recognition is given for attempts alongside achievement of these skills. Some Centres can enter Mac the Monkey students for Performing Arts Examinations through the worldwide recognised exam board Trinity College London. Through this examination procedure we are able to ensure that our classes contain recognised basic pre–school performing arts content and teaching techniques and these examination sessions allow outside performing arts experts give their views on the children’s development through regular participation in these annual examinations along with the Mac the Monkey Performing Arts Classes.
Whether it be our internal assessments or external Trinity College ones, each child’s progression is monitored in a fun and constructive way. By the end of our year each child has achieved their certificate/medal/trophy – teaching our children that rewards come from hard work and perseverance. Alongside the ‘technical’ elements of Gymnastics, Sports and all aspects of Performing Arts, children learn basic invaluable life skills before they go to school and can continue to develop them through our older classes. Mac the Monkey classes are a great start in life!
